In the spring of 1975, the South Family property on Mount Lebanon was purchased by the Sufi Order International, which established it as a new spiritual residential community lead by the Pir of the Order, Vilayat Inayat Khan. This residential community was named The Abode Of the Message.
In 1910, Pir Hazrat Inayat Khan was the original leader of this movement and the founder of the Sufi Order of the West which is now known as the Sufi Order International. The activities of the Sufi Order International are contained within five concentrations — The Esoteric School, The Healing Order, The Universal Worship, Kinship Activity, and Ziraat. The Sufi Order International preaches tolerance towards different religions and a belief that wisdom comes from all sources.
In 1975 Sufi Order initiates came from all parts of the United States to Mount Lebanon to found The Abode of the Message. Over 75 adults and 25 children worked hard to restore the farm and repair the buildings. That community is still in existence today as an in-residence, economically self-sustaining spiritual community for the purpose of promoting the religious teachings of the Sufi Order, offering interfaith religious services, classes, workshops and retreats. The Abode of the Message is the home of the current Pir of the Sufi Order International, Zia Inayat Khan
The community also includes a working organic farm, a seasonal mountain camp and is the location of the Flying deer Nature Center.
